It is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. It can cause intestinal bleeding, toxic heart disease, pneumonia, seizures and swelling of the brain. Worldwide there are around 13-16 million cases of Typhoid reported each year of which 500,000 culminate in death. At JMW Vicary Pharmacy we always say prevention is better than cure. Countries at risk
The disease is extensively prevalent in much of the world, including South Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa. However, it isn’t common in the UK, with an estimated of only 500 cases occurring each year. Moreover, these cases arise when UK residents visit other countries and have not taken the proper vaccinations to prevent or fight such diseases.
